What is a Claude skill?

A reusable promptsaved as a file

Every time you re-explain your brand voice, re-paste your tone guidelines, or re-describe your research style ~ that is time you should not be spending. A skill captures all of that once, in a .md file, and makes it permanently available to Claude.

Skills are not chatbot system prompts. They are structured documents with a name, a description, and a set of instructions Claude follows whenever that skill is active. You write them once. Claude uses them forever.

Two ways to use skills

Claude CodevsClaude.ai

Claude Code

CLI ~ Developer Setup

Claude Code is the command-line tool you run inside VS Code or your terminal. Skills live as .md files in your repo and are invoked with slash commands. They live in git, version-controlled alongside your code.

How to install

1

Save the file

.claude/skills/brand-voice.md

Create a skills/ folder inside .claude/ at the root of your project. Save your generated .md file there.

2

Reference it in CLAUDE.md

Skill: .claude/skills/brand-voice.md

Add a Skill line to your CLAUDE.md file. Claude Code will load it automatically at the start of every session.

3

Invoke with a slash command

/brand-voice

Type /brand-voice in Claude Code to activate the skill for that session. Or set it to always-on in CLAUDE.md.

Best for

Developers and builders working in VS Code

Teams who want shared, version-controlled skills

Workflows that run alongside code changes

Claude.ai

Web App ~ No Code Needed

Claude.ai is the web and mobile interface at claude.ai. Skills work here through Projects ~ a Claude.ai feature that gives conversations persistent instructions. Paste your skill file as a Project instruction and it is always active.

How to install

1

Create a Project

Open Claude.ai → click Projects in the sidebar → New Project. Give it a name matching the skill (e.g. Brand Voice).

2

Add as Project instructions

Inside the Project → click Set instructions. Paste the full contents of your generated skill file. Save.

3

Every chat in the project uses it

Any conversation you start inside this Project will have the skill active automatically. No slash command needed.
